So you’re thinking of going freelance. If you read my blog post on my big leap into the freelance world then you’ll understand all my reasons for doing it and hopefully you ‘hoorah’ed at me taking the risk. Whilst I am absolutely thrilled I did, here’s a few things I’ve learnt since going solo.
Motivational Methods
You are your own motivator. Whilst you can work from your bed, and refuse to change out of your pjs… you also have to crack on some how. I’ve found if I arrange my day around a timed schedule I get far more done then if I wing it. I’ll schedule every hour in the working day for clients to keep me focussed.
Bosses are everywhere
‘I don’t want to be working for anyone else’ is something someone once said to me when we talked about the possibility of her going freelance. I still chuckle. Yes, you are your own boss… HOWEVER you’ll find all of your clients become mini bosses. Whilst it’s usually fun to work alongside them, they have deadlines, they control your invoice pay dates, briefs etc. Essentially, you have a load of mini bosses asking you for different things and you have to juggle.
LoNeLinEss
Lonely, I am so lonely, I got nobodyyyyyyy… all on my own! Sometimes I have felt incredibly lonely. Other days I feel happy in my own company. I’ve found that grabbing a couple of co-working buddies really helps (and the fact I meet my clients for 1-2-1s on the regular).
Knowing your worth can be hard (and confusing)
Set prices? Who knows. Sometimes it’s a bit of a guessing game when it comes to freelancing. I price a lot of things roughly off a rate card but my prices can vary. Sometimes I’ll undersell my services and learn from this later. Other times I’m happy as Larry.

Can you relate to any of these?

Definitely with clients becoming mini bosses! I’ve stepped back from client work now and I don’t actively look for it anymore after past experiences! x
