When it comes to cake, there isn’t much that tops a classic Victoria sponge cake. Whether you simply fancy baking something to enjoy at home with your family at the weekend, or you’ve got an event coming up that calls for cake, a Victoria sponge will always fit the bill!
Making a Victoria Sponge Cake
The internet is full of wonderful recipes for Victoria sponge cakes, so you’ll never be short on choice. They all work on the same base ingredient list of sugar, butter, eggs, and flour, and then you might find a few variations depending on which recipe you’re looking at! From start to finish, the average Victoria sponge cake should take you about an hour to prepare and bake, but think very carefully about when you want to make your cake if you have an event to take it to. Remember you’ll need your cake to cool completely before you decorate it!

Decorating a Victoria Sponge Cake
Traditionally, Victoria sponge cakes are filled with fresh cream and jam, and honestly, you can’t go far wrong with this traditional approach. If you want to add a little extra something, then consider adding more cream and fresh berries to the top of your cake in a pretty pattern to give it a bit of extra flair.
As mentioned previously, you will need to make sure your sponge cake or cakes are completely cooled before you start decorating. Fresh cream will melt quickly on a warm cake, destroying any hope of nice neat decoration! If you decide to opt for the less traditional route of using piped buttercream, you’ll also need to make sure you don’t decorate until completely cool.
