*This post is sponsored, but all words and opinions regarding what topics to discuss on a First Date are my own
First dates can be awkward right? When it comes to meeting someone in person for the first time it can sometimes be an easy conversation where everything is flowing or sincerely awkward. No one wants to go on a date and think ‘eeek that was super awkward’ so sometimes it can be handy to have a little list of topics or questions you can discuss first time round in order to make it go as smoothly as possible. Here are my topic suggestions on what to talk about on a First Date.
Use a cracking Ice Breaker
A good ice breaker can easily get the conversation moving. Whilst there isn’t a magic formula over what makes a good ice breaker it can come down to a list of questions. So here are my 5 favourite ice breaker questions:
1. “Are you a cat or dog person?”
This is perfect for you to suss out what future pet you’re going to buy when inevitably this becomes the romance of your dreams.. just kidding… well, maybe.
2. “If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?”
It’s not a trick question, and if they answer ‘here with you’ I’d probably be checking out some free dating websites. The reality is, this is a great way to see where is the world is close to their heart. Maybe you have a common interest!
3. “What’s your favourite TV show”
Maybe you can start planning all of those Netflix & Chill days, or maybe you will take a sharp exit. Either way it’s a way to understand whether they’re into comedies or dramas.
4. “What would be your go-to karaoke song”
It doesn’t even matter if you’d actually sing it. What matters is letting your hair down and admitting you wanna sing Sex Bomb by Tom Jones in the wee hours of the morning.
5. “What’s your favourite pizza topping?”
Now is time to see if you’ve found a fellow pineapple on pizza person or the OG Margherita kinda person. Either way, it’s an easy way to break the ice.
Asking basic questions about home life
It’s usually quite easy for someone to talk about the city they grew up in or where they’re from. You could ask basic details about their school life or dive deep into whether they actually signed up to Isle of wight Dating. Or you could ask them about how often they go to the pub and what is their favourite pub meal. Keeping it simple is a really good way to make both of you feel comfortable.
- Ask about their childhood friends and if they’re still in touch
- Ask about their favourite topic at school and why
- Did they stay at home or move onwards for their current job?
The Wild Card
Finally I always like to throw a wild question in. Something like, “what would you do if you won a million pounds?” is always a really interesting way to get to know someone.
Remember, whatever happens, you want to have fun with your topics! Keep it light hearted and hopefully you’ll both get that second date!
