Hello again! I haven’t spoken for a little while about sewing so I thought it would be a really great opportunity to check back in. I’ve been sewing now for a few months and in that time I’ve made dresses, skirts, tops and short rompers. I have almost thrown my machine at the wall, unpicked stitches so many times and cried. It is an emotional process and here are 3 things I wish I knew as a sewing beginner before I got started.
Wind the Bobbin up is not just a cute song
If I had a penny for the amount of times I’ve sung this whilst sewing. Before you get sewing, it’s really important to take the time to get familiar with your own sewing machine and especially the bobbin. Once you’ve figured out how to wind it up and how it should thread through things get a lot easier. Take a few test tries before sewing anything extravagant.
Scrap fabric is your friend
Fabric is expensive. It’s no wonder people opt for the cheaper cost of purchasing because fabric holds a heavy price tag at times. Find charity shops, a scrap store and end of roll ebay stores to get yourself started. Scrap fabric will be your best friend for your pocket and your mindset. As you first begin, you’ll make mistakes. It is a lot easier to make mistakes on a £2 piece that was going to landfill before you rescued it than a £50 cut you’ve bought.
It’s ok to take a break
I’d argue it’s healthy. When it gets tough. When you’ve made a bunch of mistakes and you’re feeling irritated, it’s good to step away from the machine. I’ve done this recently and I’m now yearning to go back. But I’m refreshed, calm and ready to slow the process down again to learn.
Have you ever tried sewing?
