Many of us feel the pinch of the purse strings over the winter months, but we still want to go on fun days out with our family, especially if we’ve got young kids. Luckily, there are plenty of things to do in the UK that don’t cost a penny and will keep everyone entertained all day. Pack your packed lunch and a sense of adventure, and off you go!
- Explore your local area
Wherever you live, there will be lots to see and do locally. Head to your local park, woods, or forest and see what you can find. Climb trees, find wildlife, make a scavenger hunt for the kids to complete, make nature collages and patterns on the ground as you explore. If you live near the coast then go and have a look at all of the boats, go beachcombing, or collect shells. Play Pictionary in the sand, and dip your toes in the water to see how cold it is! On particularly cold days, take flasks of tea or hot chocolate to enjoy as you go.
- Museums and Galleries
Your nearest town or city almost certainly has a museum or gallery to explore for free. Most of them have various things to see and do that have been designed with children in mind, so there should be enough to keep your little ones entertained. As a bonus, give your children a sketchbook and pencil, and set your them the task of recreating a painting, or writing down ten interesting facts they come across.
- Piggyback on a friend’s membership
If you have friends with memberships to things like English Heritage, the National Trust, and the RHS, you’ll find that they are usually allowed to take an adult guest and several children guests in with them when they visit somewhere on their membership. If you have a willing friend with a membership, then this is a brilliant way of seeing somewhere new for free, and catching up with a friend at the same time!
