Growing your own vegetables at home in your own garden or allotment feels amazing, and they always seem to taste better too! Some veggies are notoriously difficult to grow, but luckily there are plenty of things available to grow from seed that are perfect for beginner gardeners.
Before you start planting up your vegetable beds or flower pots with seeds, think carefully about what you and your family actually enjoy eating. For example, radishes are really easy to grow, but many people don’t actually like the taste of them and find them far too peppery! Imagine successfully growing lots of radishes and then realising you don’t like them and not knowing what to do with them!
- Lettuce
Lettuce is the perfect beginner plant to grow for anyone wanting to grow their own food! It’s so easy that kids’ often have wonderful success growing it, and it’s fun to grow as it comes along quite quickly. Lettuce will happily grow at most times of the year, and in almost anything. If you don’t have a whole bed to dedicate to growing it, it’ll do just as well in a pot, or even an old crate, as long as it has some drainage!
- Courgettes
You can grow courgettes either from seed, or from a plug plant which is a little plant that’s already established. Either way, it’ll grow well in most soil types and can be planted into pots if you’re short on space. It’s pretty hardy and just one courgette plant can produce loads of fruit!
- Tomatoes
Tomatoes are great fun to grow, and it’s wonderful to watch as the tomatoes ripen in warm weather. Sometimes growing a tomato plant from seed can be a bit hit and miss, but garden centres will always sell plug plants throughout the spring and summer. If you have a few plants, then the chances are, you will be able to harvest enough tomatoes to make your very own home grown tomato soup!
