The nights are drawing in and the weather has started cooling off – autumn is most definitely here! With autumn come some changes in the garden, and there are some things you can do to prepare your garden for the coming months. These ideas are very simple so don’t worry if you’re not all that green fingered.
-
Chop your garden plants back
If you still have lots of leafy vegetation left over from spring and summer, you may have noticed it start to change in colour. Greens will gradually turn to orange and then brown, and some of the previously luscious looking plants and flowers in your garden will start to look very dead. This is really easy to deal with – simple grab some garden secateurs or shears (depending on the size of the plants in your garden) and give everything a good trim. Trim spring and summer plants right back and put all of the cuttings into your garden waste bin or compost heap.
-
Keep a watch on fallen leaves
If you live somewhere where your garden is susceptible to getting full of fallen leaves from nearby trees, try to keep on top of it. Go into the garden every couple of days with your gardening gloves on, and pick up any loose leaves that you see floating around. This will stop them from turning into mulch all over your garden. Add them to your compost bin or compost heap if you have one – worms will love them!

Plant some tough plants
Head down to your local garden centre and see what they suggest for the colder months. You can add surprisingly colourful plants to your garden to keep everything looking lively – just make sure your plants of choice will be able to deal with the frost come late autumn and winter. Things like heathers and decorative cabbage and kale plants are a great place to start if you are unsure!
