If you have kids then you’ll be well aware that they come with frequent sickness bugs, and that poorly kids are never much fun to deal with, especially if you’re feeling under the weather too! In situations where the kids are feeling a bit off, it’s important to adjust your standards accordingly to minimise stress levels as much as you possibly can. It’s probably unrealistic for most of us to expect our kids to be up and dressed, engaging in all kinds of activities, and eating super healthily when they’re poorly, and that is absolutely fine.

Getting dressed
Feeling poorly is the ultimate excuse for a pyjama day – being able to spend all day in the comfiest clothes is one of those little things that can help us to feel a bit more cosy, which is much needed when we’re not very well! A lot of the time, when we are poorly, we need to conserve energy too, so getting dressed should be pretty low on the list of priorities unless it is absolutely necessary. In some cases, even pyjamas might feel too much. If your child has a temperature and feels most comfortable sitting in their underwear or a nappy, let them!

Food
While there is no doubt that healthy food is brilliant for helping your body mend when you are ill, don’t beat yourself up if you can’t manage it, or if the kids won’t eat it. At the end of the day, fed is best, so if that means they eat some McDonald’s chips and ten slices of toast, that’s okay.

Activities
Often, all notion of activities go out of the window when sickness is about. Many of us, kids included, don’t want to do much more than lie in bed or sit on the sofa, and often that is our body telling us to rest. To fight off the boredom, see if you can tempt your child with a book, comic, or magazine to keep them entertained. Failing this, don’t worry if they want to spend some time vegging out in front of the TV or with a tablet in hand – screentime limitations are sometimes best paused when it’s a matter of poorly kids!
