If you follow me on social media, or indeed have followed this blog for a while you may notice that my hair length changes quite rapidly. I have a blunt lob cut in naturally, and every now and then I go through a phase of wanting long princess locks and opt to see my hairdresser for some extensions. It’s been a while since my hair was naturally long. Now I’ve tried pretty much every method in the book (except I haven’t quite made it to wigs yet). Over the years of trying different methods I’ve discovered there are a few things I wish I’d have known before trying extensions and here I am, popping them out to the world to share them.
Before I get fully into it, having the right tools is essential, from proper detaingling brushes to a hairdryer than you change the settings on, like an mdlondon blow hair dryer and don’t forget straightens where you can turn the heat down.
1. The Pain
When you first have hair extensions fitted, whether this be using micro-loops or a sew in weave you’ll find your head feels a little sore. The weight of the hair should be evenly distributed to ensure no damage but it can leave you feeling a little uneasy. Sleeping on them the first week is horrible and washing them the first time makes you wanna cringe. If you have any doubts about a pulling sensation or the pain levels then go immediately back to your hairdresser. You can’t be too careful.
If you don’t like pain, then I’d recommend you look into another method of lengthening your hair. Perhaps a more on-the-go system such as toupee style toppers or clip in pony-tails. These will be super easy to remove should you have any discomfort and you’ll be able to sleep on a night without any bother.
2. The matting
It’s true that good quality hair doesn’t tangle as as easily as lower grade. However, as with most methods of hair extensions you don’t have any space for your hair to shed naturally (did you know we lose around 200-350 a day?). Therefore either towards the end of your wearing period, or after you’ve taken them out you’ll find a load of your hair is matted up at the roots. As you gradually tease through this with a comb you may begin to panic that you’re losing all your hair. Not to worry… it’s just the shedding of months of hair that hasn’t been able to escape. Your hair should be absolutely fine providing it was fitted by a qualified individual.
3. Difficulties with styling
I have had my hair fitted by several different professionals in different salons, using different hairs and almost EVERY time I have still been able to see some of the hair extension when tying my hair up. If you like popping you hair in different half up, half down looks then it may be worth looking into a different method or alerting these concerns to your hairdresser. Most will ask you how often you tie your hair up and fit as best as they can without displaying any lines. They do have to blend it all though so props to them.
I have however seen great success with styling when it comes to wigs! Something to think about eh?
4. Saving the Money
Yup, I’ve saved a fortune by buying the hair myself then having it professionally installed. Turning to the internet you can find a lot of extension and wigs sellers and assess their quality of products within moments by googling reviews of them. A fantastic way to check the company you’re looking to buy off.
Tell me about your experience with Hair Extensions or wigs?
