*This post is in conjunction with Local Heroes, but all thoughts are my own
It’s just around that time for Pumpkin Spice and all things nice isn’t it? Autumn is absolutely my favourite season. With the weather just starting to turn I can layer up my outfits, pull out the chunky knit sweaters and crunch the golden leaves under my feet on each walk. Ever since I was little I’ve always known when the weather had officially changed as my dad would fill me and my sisters with glee by telling us that we could FINALLY turn on the boiler for winter (we were strictly a no heating till October household). This gave us ample opportunity to get into the cosy way of life and each evening you’d find all of us wrapped up on the sofa huddling together to watch the latest film. Looking back, he did this all to save money on the heating bill (we had one of those old boilers, much prefer our condensing one) and now that I’m in charge of my own outgoings, I’m hyper aware of the ways to save the pennies.
I’ve picked up some proven tips for cosying up in Autumn and you lucky folks are going to get all the insight. So grab a cuppa and a blanket, and here we go.
Create a Warm atmosphere
Pull out those chunky knit jumpers or thick woolly blankets and cosy up on the sofa. I usually pop a message to my sisters to alert them we can finally put our Boilers on and make sure it’s set to the perfect temperature for all the household. Our topic usually turns to the health of our boilers and boy oh boy has it been made simpler to follow a little basic Boiler hygiene now with the help of the internet. Did you know for example that you should bleed your radiators every year? I think I did this for the first time last year (my Building Services engineer Dad was ever so proud when I told him about the wonderful hissing sound it made!)
Whether you have an older Boiler or a new one it’s important to get to know them. Listen out for any funny noises, strange smells (your boiler should never smell) and just like how you’ll be wrapping up on the sofa, make sure that your boiler condensate pipe is well insulated. There have been tragic times in the past where I’ve found a couple of issues with the pressure in my boiler (yup you should check that too!) but now I can turn to Local Heroes for any emergencies.
Set the Mood
On top of it being vital that the room feels the perfect temperature, there are some other things you should do. Use candles, fairy lights or anything else you fancy to get into those autumnal vibes. I have one of those artificial log burners and my evening isn’t complete till I have the glimmering lights of it on to get me feeling super cosy. To optimise this, choose a cosy Autumnal scent such as Pumpkin spice (and all things nice!)
Get your favourite choice of drink
I’m a huge fan of peppermint tea, but perhaps you’d rather a hot chocolate? Get out your favourite mug and fill it. Whatever your poison then make sure you’ve got it set up next to the sofa so that once you’re tucked under all your blankets you won’t need to move!
Switch off to your favourite film/read
In order to really optimise your comfort then it’s time to get your mind relaxing. Some prefer to cosy up with their favourite book, me? I prefer to pop on a comedy and giggle the evening away.
Snuggle up with a friend
I love a cuddle and whenever feel the cooler weather come in it just feels like an excuse to snuggle up with a loved one. Whether that be your boyfriend, child, dog/cat or even favourite teddy then make sure you enjoy that little cutch.
If you want a full useful guide on how to prepare your Boiler for winter then you should check out this useful Boiler Advice guide which I’m going to be circulating amongst my family and friends.
Go on, tell me what date you turned on your boiler this year? I promise I won’t judge.

Mum used to put the oven on and open the doors instead of putting the heating on so Dad wouldn’t tell her off! 😉
Good advice our heating most definately on and crochet blanket at the ready to snuggle up in.
Wow can’t believe I didn’t know I’m meant to bleed my radiators every year! So useful! I bought a giant blanket this year and my heating is on high! Love the cosy-ness in Autumn/Winter.
Super post! ☕️ 🧣 🍁 ❄️
Snuggling up with a cuppa is a must ❤️
Love these tips! My heating didn’t go on until end of October – I’m definitely a jumper first kinda gal!
Loved this post Violet. We didn’t put our heating on until a few weeks ago. Our place stays quite warm with us being in an apartment but there are some great tips here. Currently laid on the sofa with a blanket and hot drink whilst reading this post ❤️
August 😂🙈 usually I wait til October but we had a night where it was just SO cold! x
