If you follow me over on instagram then you’ll know that I’ve recently taken up sewing. Now, in all honesty, this kinda happened on a bit of a whim. I’ve always wanted to make my own bits and bobs but never really had the talent. I tried knitting, I tried crocheting and sewing was what was left. But was I really up to it? Well, I borrowed my mum’s old sewing machine and started to basically give random things a go. I found a Content Creator Rosery Apparel who seemed to have some straight forward video walk-throughs on her youtube that didn’t require a pattern so I thought okay, let’s just go for it. I started with her simple puff sleeve smock dress and immediately felt like I was gonna fail, but I didn’t.
With a bit of luck and a tonne of motivation, I successfully managed to create a smock dress (that I’ve since made in several different old bed sheets I was gonna throw away). I’m a little obsessed with it and it was actually quite straight forward to make as it was only 4 rectangles then a bit of work with elastic and shirring elastic.
Now that I know just what winding the bobbin’ up actually means, who knows what else I’ll make. All I know is I’m committed to improving my skills and re-purposing as many old items as I can. I suppose it’s my way of avoiding buying as many new items. That’s not to say I’ll be perfect at first because I certainly won’t. But I’ve spent the week in charity shops looking for unique fabrics and it’s been absolutely lush.
I guess it’s a new hobby to add to my ever growing list. Now tell me, have you ever tried sewing?
