I’ve spent years researching my family history. I’ve just about managed to do all of Joe’s tree too. I’ve just always had an interest in the past and my past ancestors. Whilst my mum’s side is a little tricky to do, my dad’s was near impossible. I know hardly anything and he doesn’t seem to know much either. So I always wondered, was I literally all British (who is really?) and what would like in my ancestry DNA?
The test arrived and I put my saliva sample into a tube. They should probably warn you that it feels a bit like spitting out metal by the end as you can’t eat or drink beforehand meaning it’s actually a lot harder to do than you think. I sent it off in the post and had an email to say they’d received it. Then began the long wait… around 8 weeks passed and I’d still heard nothing. I kept logging in to see that my ‘DNA was being processed’ and was eagled eyed awaiting for the next stage to light up. Eventually it did and I logged in.
I opened up the website to see the below map:
It read:
48% England & North Western Europe
38% Scotland
7% Norway
7% Ireland
Upon closer inspection I could see little glimpses of links to areas I had no idea I’d have any connection to. I was excited and thrilled to see possible connections to Norway, North Western Europe and particularly a little circle around Switzerland.
Probably less shocking was the VERY clear link to the Manchester area that comes from my dad’s side.
I’m still figuring out a lot of this, but from what I can understand so far it seems to mean I have DNA traces of these regions and there are possible links. All very exciting! I’m going to do some more research on this and come back when I’ve figured out a bit more.
Have you ever looked into your ancestral DNA?
