If you follow me on Twitter, you’ll have seen on Friday a series of tweets following some media backlash on my beloved home town. Whilst this is not a post to write a list about all the things that make Hull great (see my gal Ashton do that very well here), this is a plea to ask the big ole wide world to hit the reset button on their perception of us. Places change eh?
For the longest time, ever since I was a pupil at ole Bricknell Primary School I remember being taught about Hull’s involvement with Historical events throughout time. Whilst we had a very positive impact on these events the outside world’s perception seemed to always be negative. Our city, which was dramatically bombed during the War, didn’t photograph as beautifully as say our nearby town, Beverley. But is this really our fault?

Fast forward to 2017 and with City of Culture our city was awarded a huge £220m of investment. Pavements were ripped up, buildings were constructed and our Historic buildings received a little TLC. It was a stressful year trying to navigate the roads, but totally worth it for the outcome. However people still talk negatively about our city as somewhere with nothing to do and little going on.
I’ve written a post on reasons to love Hull before, which better puts forward my opinion on this topic. But I ask, if you have a perception of Hull (from whatever media you use). Have you visited? If so, how long ago? Quite often the negative perception come from old statistics and folk who visited 20 odd years ago to go to the Port and across to Rotterdam. I say, this is not our City.

Our city is much like that of our well loved Pattie. A mash of different textures and flavours. A delicious treat that is only sampled by the few and those ‘in the know’. Perhaps this is the best way to be. A little secret if you like. Who doesn’t love to exceed the expectations eh?
