When it comes to party hair, my choices are always quite clear. I’ll either opt for a slick, tight knotted high pony (hello hairspray and lots of patience) or opt for the wavy, wild, bold waves that I adore. After years of trying to perfect these two looks , I think I’ve finally nailed the bold waves and have a couple of tips to share about creating that perfect Christmas party hair.
How to Create the Perfect Bold Waves
I have just about mastered this technique with straighteners now, after years of trying to use curling tongs and finding I was more ‘curly sue’ than a balayage beach wave babe. So if you’re feeling a little lost on how you can achieve these waves then here’s my tips.
What you’ll need:
- Straighteners
- Heat Protection Spray
- Clips to Section Hair
- Hairspray
- A teasing comb or hairbrush

- Wash and dry your hair, apply your heat protector and begin to section. I usually work by measuring a couple of fingers horizontally from the back of my hair and section (essentially you end up with a big ole messy bun on top of your head in the process, but we’ll worry about that later).
- Once you have your first section, bring your hair to the front, and take a couple of cm of hair at a time. Pop your straighteners in towards your scarf (BUT DON’T TOUCH) and tilt your straighteners at between a 150-180 degree angle depending on the intensity of the curl and the thickness of your hair.
- Repeat this, alternating towards your face and away. It might look a bit tight at first but you’ll be able to pull out the curls later and smooth them. Work your way all the way up your hair to your final parting. I recommend your last section being slightly larger than your below ones if you want a more relaxed look as the weight of the hair will pull the curls down giving you those lovely waves you desire.
- Once all the hair is curled you can either pull through with your fingers or tease out with a comb or brush. Set with hairspray and you’re good to go!
If you really want to go all extra, then why not add a hair band, or some hair glitter to up your festive look. I hear adding a pair of antlers can be extremely festive right now.
