Hull. Unless you’ve visited fairly recently, or even if you have, you may have an opinion on the place. I’ve often got into pretty heated discussions over my home town. You see, I’m Hull born and bred and thoroughly proud of it. I know we have our flaws, but doesn’t everywhere? There are a few little things about this place that make it super special to me.
Low expectations
As I say, people often have low expectations of Hull and for me that’s one of the best things about the place. I love showing someone around and playing tour guide to show them all of the incredible and beautiful places in this city. Free museums? We got em’, amazing coffee? Check, art scene? Yup. Honestly, I think we have much more to offer than people realise. City of Culture 2017 did a fantastic job of shouting out all about it, yet people still have their perceptions…
Cost of living
University friends of mine always talk about how they miss the cost of things in Hull. Whether it be a cheap pint in the pub or the cost of buying a house, Hull certainly allows you to stretch that money a little further without compromise. You only have to have a quick look on rightmove to compare prices to other cities (but perhaps pop me a message first to make it a fair comparison eh?)
Location
I’m sure many will come at me and say ‘we’re the end of the motorway it’s poo!’ Others? They’ll say we’re on the coast, so if you fancy being on a nice beach you can do so in around 40 minutes. Same goes for visiting an old historical city, York is around 45 minutes drive. We have our own train company, and direct routes to London. There’s a lot to be said about being nicely tucked on the East coast.
The History
We’re rich in it. I’ve spoken about this before, but honestly living here, in the History is the best. For a nerdy History buff like me, I love it. If you speak to folk who work in the museums you can get a vibe that they’re so passionate about it too. Bloody love it.
Have you visited Hull?
Violet x

Yes!!! Love this post Violet, I literally can’t wait to visit. I have only been once but you can’t really count it as I was off for the ferry to Amsterdam so didn’t really see Hull that much 🙂
