I’ve just got back from Tenerife and it’s got me thinking about family holidays and how to do them. If you’ve been on holiday with kids before then this might not be new to you, but if you’re planning your first family trip, these are some things to keep in mind when you are planning and booking everything!
- Travelling
If you’re planning a trip where you’ll be flying, then plan carefully. Make sure you know what amenities the airport has, and that you have enough with you to keep your kids entertained in case of delays. Once you’re off and in the sky, make sure you’ve got enough things to do for the duration of your flight! Kids can get super agitated when there’s lots of waiting around so it always pays to be prepared!
If you’re driving to your destination, then take a look to see where all the rest stops are along the way. You might not need to use them, but it’s an excellent idea to know where they are in case you need to make an emergency pit stop.
- Accommodation
Booking accommodation as a family is very different to booking as a couple or a solo adult. You’ll need to check that things like cots and highchairs are provided, or sofa beds if you have older kids. Some hotels offer adjoining rooms which is great if you have pre-teens or teens with you as it gives them a bit of privacy without them being fully alone.
If you’ve got a buggy then it’s worth checking accessibility of the place you are staying, and looking at room sizes to check the buggy will actually fit!
Sometimes booking an entire apartment or cabin is the best option for families, but double check that it’s kid-safe before you make your booking!
- Getting Around
When you’re in your destination, how will you be getting around? Check to see what the options are – lots of cities offer free shuttle, bus, and tram services which can make life easier, but they’re not always buggy friendly, although they are great for older kids. Your accommodation might be walking distance from all the local attractions, but is it walking distance for little legs?
- Food
Food can be one of the highlights of a trip away, but sometimes kids aren’t always happy about not being able to eat their tried and tested favourites. If you think this could be an issue for your kids on holiday, then make sure to pack some of their favourite dried snacks in your suitcase. This way, they can have some of their favourites from home if they’re not keen on what’s on offer in your holiday destination!
- Supplies
If you need nappies, wipes, and baby food, make sure you check out what local amenities are available in your holiday destination. There might be a local supermarket that stocks everything you need, or perhaps you’ll need to make arrangements to take supplies with you.
