Being more sustainable in and around your house is pretty easy, and thankfully, easy sustainability doesn’t have to be expensive! There are countless ways that you can adapt your regular home life to be a little bit greener, but here are some easy ways to get you going if you’re not sure where to start!
- Compost
Composting is a perfect way of dealing with your food waste, and amazingly cost effective. Many people have a food waste caddy, provided by their local council, that is collected on a weekly, or fortnightly basis by waste disposal services. If you don’t already have a food waste caddy or bin, get in touch with your council and see if you can get one – you might find that it’s free too which is a bonus.
If you have any outside space then consider getting yourself a compost bin or tumbler. If you’re handy with DIY projects then you can probably knock up your own with some old timber and a few Youtube tutorials, but otherwise they are readily available online in many different sizes and price ranges! Once you’ve got an outdoor compost bin, you can use it to get rid of your food waste and create your own compost to be used in your garden or allotment! Easy sustainability at its finest.
- Keep a bag of bags in the car
If you don’t already do this, then keeping a bag of bags in the car is a must. If you find yourself often out and about with a buggy or stroller then keep some in there too! With spare bags on hand, you’ll never have to pay that pesky 10p bag charge in a shop and will be doing the planet a favour.
It’s a great idea to get some really long lasting eco bags if you’ve got the funds to do so. Turtle Bags are great for this (and hold loads), but supermarket bags for life really stand up to the test of time too, and have infinite uses.
- Use a timer
The concept of using a timer isn’t a new one when it comes to boilers and controlling when your heating comes on and off. Today, thanks to smart technology and physical timer plugs, you can put pretty much any electrical appliance on a timer! This is a wonderful way to save electricity by making sure everything is off when you’re not at home, or at night, and by saving electricity, you’re being kinder to the planet. Aside from the green advantages to using timers, it’s also incredibly handy. You can set the radio to come on at a certain time in the morning and the lights to dim at a certain time of night. Give it a go, you won’t look back!
