*This post is a collaboration as such I have received a fee for my post on pets, but all words and opinions are my own.
With a new addition to our family, I can’t help but think about how my pets can be overlooked every now and then. Now I don’t mean in the essence of care, they are absolutely loved but where are their pictures on the wall eh? Maybe it’s time to add some.
For those who don’t know, I have a 10 year old cat called Marmite (who I adopted what seems another life ago), and a 6 year old Miniature Schnauzer Oscar. Both of which joined me at times when I really needed them. Pets really are family aren’t they? Both have had to adjust to life with my toddler Jasper and now newborn Goldie. We’ve been so fortunate that both pets took little persuading to get to grips with the children and whilst Oscar took on a guard dog position at the bottom of the cot, the cat would lay next to me and both babies each time, keeping a watchful eye out. They really do complete the family. So in what ways can we make sure they’re still given the love an attention they deserve?
Ensure they’re cared for
Whilst every day love and affection is absolutely required and the best part of having animals. You also need to make sure they’re up to date on their vaccinations, health checks and insurance cover. We have co-ordinated both of our pets to be due check ups the same month each year, that way we don’t forget. Our vet also sends handy reminders for any boosters due. Whilst some pets hate a trip to the vet, it’s essential to ensure we give them the proper love and care they deserve.
It goes without saying that you should ensure they have access to clean water and food daily. My dog requires a certain amount of exercise each day and my cat goes outside so I check her for any marks or cuts every few days. If your pets require grooming you should ensure you take time to do this or book in with a good groomer to undertake any upkeep. Oscar really requires a groom once a month.
Create a Pet Corner
Take photos of your pets, after all, they’re super adorable. I can go through my phone and find a dedicated pet folder for mine, I guarantee if you do the same it’s handy for a rainy day. A few years ago I ordered an illustration of our dog for my husband’s Christmas present, it looked just like Oscar and has taken pride of place in our hallway. Safe to say it was the talking point of the day and other’s still mention it now!
Book a petcation
A few years back we booked a trip revolving around the needs of our dog, yup, a petcation. We choose to go somewhere he could run off his lead, explore new terrain and tire him out daily. We took him to the Lake District and oh my goodness, he loved it. It gave us the opportunity to spoil him with love and every evening he would curl up by the log burner and snooze happily knowing he’d made the most of his day. If you’re wanting to give your dog a little more attention this could be the way! For our cat, we sent her to the fabulous fancy cattery (they even have four poster beds for them) and she ate the best cat food for the week and snoozed. Living her best life!
Embrace the affection
If like me, you run a million miles an hour it can sometimes be hard to slow down to enjoy when your cat stretches out on your lap. My cat often takes up the invite after I’ve been on my laptop. What can I say? I guess she likes the warmth. Whilst I’m not the greatest fan of the clawing… her purring is honestly (to this day) one of the most soothing sounds.
So go on, tell me all about your pets and let me know which of these points you already use or will be using to make the most of your furry friends. I (as most people do) love to hear about other people’s pets and can’t wait to read about yours.
