I’ve been wanting to write this blog post for ages and it’s a bit of an odd one to right. The truth is that going from one child to two completely knocked me off my feet at the beginning. Readers of the blog will know I announced I had post natal depression back in August and since then lots of work and healing has been done to get myself into a good place with my mental health. I wanted to offer some comfort to any parents feeling the same way and put my thoughts down on how the transition from one to two children made me feel.
At the beginning, it was hard. I had one child peak toddler age, requiring all kinds of different entertainment and wondering what the heck was happening with this new sibling that had come into our household and changed our world. My daughter, the newborn was requiring around the clock attention and I suddenly found the little bit of freedom I’d been getting accustomed to with my more independent toddler was gone. I was back to feeding, changing, sleeping and all of those lovely baby moments that you dream about when you’d like a child in your family. It was hard. It was made worse by the fact I didn’t take maternity leave and continued to try and juggle work around my children and it left me little time on my own. I craved my own company and I felt like it was a very long way off. It was and it wasn’t.
I rarely have time on my own now. I started running to get some time to myself but even then I take the dog. I cannot remember the last time I was solely in my own company but it’s actually ok. Things have got easier. Goldie is 10 months old now and my son is at nursery a few days a week. I can find moments of peace and quiet within the day whereas at the beginning I felt there were none. It is manageable.
